The brief

The Filipino Alamat App is a mobile application designed to preserve and promote Filipino folklore (alamat) by offering a curated collection of stories in both text and audio formats. It aims to engage children, educators, and Filipino families through an easy-to-use, culturally enriching platform.

02

The challenge

In a fast-paced digital world, traditional Filipino folktales—or alamat—have become less accessible to younger generations. These culturally rich stories, once passed down through oral tradition, are now scattered across outdated books or inconsistent online sources. Educators, parents, and heritage advocates lacked a centralized, engaging platform where these tales could be read or listened to in a format that appeals to today's users.

Approach & decisions

To preserve and modernize the storytelling tradition, the Filipino Alamat Android App was developed. The app offers a curated library of classic and regional alamat (folk stories) in both readable text and audio formats, making it accessible to a wide range of users, from children to educators and families.

A growing collection of illustrated folk stories from various regions of the Philippines is featured in the app, showcasing the rich diversity of the country's oral traditions. Users can enjoy high-quality audio narrations in Filipino, with optional English translations or subtitles to support language learning and comprehension.

Designed with simplicity in mind, the app features a child-friendly interface that makes it ideal for classroom activities or bedtime storytelling. Users can also bookmark stories and access them offline, providing convenience for reading anytime, anywhere.

Additionally, each story includes educational notes that explain cultural themes, moral lessons, and the historical or mythical origins of the tale—enhancing the educational value of the app and promoting a deeper appreciation of Filipino heritage.

06

Outcome

The Filipino Alamat app successfully bridges the gap between heritage and technology by making folk stories accessible, engaging, and educational. It preserves the spirit of oral storytelling while embracing the convenience and reach of mobile platforms. As interest in cultural identity grows among Filipinos worldwide, Filipino Alamat serves as a timeless companion for the digital age.
